Instructor Cathryn Yost works with a client at the Ellie Herman Pilates studio in Oakland. Herman, who studied in New York City with two of Joseph Pilates’ protégés, is the author of Pilates for Dummies. She now runs two thriving studios, one on Grand Avenue in Oakland and the other in San Francisco’s Mission District. Pilates exercises are a great way for people of all ages to strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and ease back and neck pain, among other benefits. In addition to Pilates, the Ellie Herman Studios offer teacher training, rehab intensives, workshops, Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture. For information, see www.ellie.net or call (415) 285-5808 (San Francisco) or (510) 594-8507 (Oakland).
